John Griffin
i was very sorry to hear about the passing of Eugene. He was a tremendous footballer,,,,,a gifted goal scorer whose record still stands after 60 yrs in Birmingham schools football as the highest ever personal tally! In 1958-9 English Martyrs School won everything worth winning and Eugene was our star striker. I was always surprised that the top managers Clough and Taylor, or Shankly weren't told about him, he was a natural ,,,,and very modest with it. However, football's loss was dentistrys gain (I became one of his patients!) I remember Eugene joining English Martyrs from a school in Handsworth - he was a brilliant goal keeper but within weeks he was playing center forward and that's when we really took off, he got 8 goals in one match, it really was phenomenal, I know because I was there playing alongside him. God bless Eugene,,,RIP, from John Griffin
PS. Our tactics from Mr Donnelly (our teacher) were very simple - get the ball to Eugene fast as you can! Yes, he really was that good!!
